MAJOR INITIATIVE: REWARDS FOR SUCCESS (RFS)

Rewards for Success (RFS) is a scholarship program that helps LA GEAR UP students build the financial assets they will need to pay for higher education-related expenses. The program is designed to supplement the state’s Tuition Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) award, which pays for student tuition. RFS rewards student academic achievement, recognizes good citizenship and behavior, and encourages parental interest and involvement in their child’s education—all qualities proven to be indicative of student success in college. Students who score well based on RFS criteria can win awards in increments of $1,000, $500, or $250. The awards are invested in special trust accounts established for each winning student. The accounts earn interest as well as special earnings enhancements granted by the state of Louisiana.

Besides providing important financial assistance to LA GEAR UP students, RFS guidelines require that high school students take the TOPS core curriculum in order to be eligible for an award. Look at our student web site to find current information about RFS awards.

RFS Features

• Individual accounts are invested in Louisiana’s 529 College Savings Plan, the START Savings Program
• Promoted through partnerships with the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance to advise students and parents about TOPS, RFS, and other financial aid
• Promoted through informational financial-aid workshops that provide hands-on exposure to Web-based resources and the college and financial aid application processes
