Meet the LA GEAR UP Crew

The LA GEAR UP Crew are several students who have varying personal experiences and backgrounds, but all have the common goal of furthering their education beyond high school.  Check them out and see if you can relate.

Cindy

So, I’m Cindy.  I’m a Junior this year and things are really starting to get moving.  I’ve already taken the ACT twice in order to get a 23.  That score, when combined with my G.P.A., will get me a TOPS Performance award.  It’ll also get me into school at McNeese which is where I really want to go.  Go Cowboys!  I’m on the dance team now and would really like to be a Cowgirl Kicker one day.  It would be a lot of fun, and it would even help pay for college.

One of my biggest goals is to help kids who have problems.  So, I want to be a child psychologist.  There are lots of things that I have to do in order to become a child psychologist.  I’ll have to get a master’s degree, and a Ph.D would be really good.  I could also go to medical school after college and become a child psychiatrist.  The difference is that a psychologist treats patients through different kinds of psychotherapy, mostly, and a psychiatrist goes to medical school and can use medication to treat patients along with therapy.  It is a tough decision, but I have some time to do some more research.  Either way I’ll have to take lots of psychology courses at McNeese.

Right now I’m reading A Child Called It by David Pelzer in order to understand the abuse some kids go through at home.  It’s all about a little boy who is badly abused and how he manages to survive his ordeal.  It’s amazing that he survived all of the stuff he went through.

 Jeremy

Hi!  My name is Jeremy, and I’m a freshman this year.  I’m pretty excited about being in high school.  Finally, I get to be part of the football team.  I really like traveling with the team to all of the places that we visit for football games.  I’m not the best defensive tackle, but I have lots of heart.

I want to be a professional photo journalist when I finish college.  My goal is to go to LSU and major in Mass Communications at the Manship School for Mass Communications.  I’ll minor in photography.  I’d really like to get an internship with the Times Picayune or another major paper so that when I graduate I’ll already have some real life experience.  I’m already taking killer photos for my school newspaper and yearbook.  It rocks!  I also work really hard to prepare for the ACT test, because I know that LSU has high requirements.  My goal is to get a 27 so that I can get a TOPS Honors Award.  We’ll see how well I do when I take the test in a couple of months.

My English teacher told me that the best way to learn how to become a good photo journalist is to read about the lives of the best.  So, I’m reading a book by Robert Capa ,a famous war photographer.  It’s called Slightly Out of Focus. It tells all about how Mr. Capa was brave in the face of danger in order to take pictures of some of the worlds worst wars so that everyday people could see for themselves.  I think I’ll probably limit my photojournalism to things closer to home for the time being, but one day maybe I’ll get to cover a natural disaster or a presidential election.

Stefan

Hey, What’s up?  I’m Stefan, and I am a Senior this year.  That’s right!  I’m almost out of here.  I’ve got everything lining up just the way it needs to be.  Next fall I’ll start school at Southern University majoring in architecture. I’ve already been accepted and everything.  It’s going to be a tough major, but I’m ready.  I’m taking the highest math class available at my school, because I know that math is important in college especially in the architecture program.  If all goes well, I’ll keep my TOPS for all four years of college.

I want to be one of those guys who designs cool buildings all over the world.  You know the type.  I want to design skyscrapers and art musuems.  I love to take things apart and see how they work.  Sometimes I think a big building is kind of alive.  It has electrical systems like living things have nerves, and it has plumbing just like we do. That’s what’s up!

I’m going to work really hard to become a great architect.  There are organizations of people out there like one called Morphosis that have a lot of really talented people all working together to make some mad cool buildings. You have to check out their website.  It was founded by a couple of guys named Thom Mayne and Michael Rotondi.  I found a book about one of Morphosis’ projects online.  It’s called Morphosis/Diamond Ranch High School by Jeffrey Kipnis and Todd Gannon.  It tells about how a single building project is produced from start to finish, and it has a bunch of detailed drawings and pictures.

I’d like to get an internship with a good organization while I’m in college so that when I do a good job they’ll ask me back after graduation.

Andrea

Hey!  I’m Andrea, and I’m an eighth grader.  School is getting harder, and sometimes I get behind.  When that happens I stay for after school tutoring, and things usually work out fine.  Some of the other kids call me the club girl, because I am a member of almost every club that eighth graders can join at my school.  I’m in Jr. Beta, FFA, Explorers Club, Math Club, and the Pep Squad.  I enjoy being active.

I’ve been thinking about what I want to be when I finish college, and I’m not sure.  It’s a lot to decide.  I know that I’m really good with computers, I enjoy art a lot, and I’m learning how to play the flute even though my brother thinks I’m terrible.

My big problem is that I don’t know what different things I can be when I grow up.  My mom is a nurse, and she gets to help people.  That sounds nice, but I want to know more.  I’m trying my best to learn about as many occupations as I can.  Next summer, I am going to go to work with a few of my mom’s friends so that I can see what they do all day.  Have you ever wondered what your parents do all day?  I know I have.  Sometimes I think they drop me off at school and then go home and go back to sleep.  I thought that until my mom brought me to the hospital with her one morning.  There is a lot of stuff happening there, and she does a bunch of it.

When I find an occupation that I am really interested in, I’m going to try to find a mentor who has that job so that I can learn more.

Hi, my name is Skye Freeman. I am a member of Many High School Explorers Club. I have been a part of LA GEAR UP for several years. I strongly believe that LA GEAR UP is a great way for students to learn more about different colleges, and what it takes to get there. I’ve seen dreams being followed, and lives being taken to the extreme. Those can be your dreams to!

Hi, my name is Sierra DeRouen. I am a member of the Anderson Middle School Explorers Club in New Iberia. I was a LA GEAR UP member in 7th grade . Although I feel it is early to start thinking about college and careers atleast I am thinking about the choices. It all starts with the positive encouragment to even dream of such opportunities . Thanks to programs like this being brought to our schools, it allows kids my age to find a way to further thier educations and they develop plans early… with parents, teachers, and advisors.
